Philosophy

We believe that good health is a way of life and that it does not come in the form of "a little white pill". One must live healthily in order to be healthy. To do such, we believe that one must focus primarily on four things:

  1. Exercise
  2. Diet
  3. Weight
  4. Tobacco (avoid)

Dr. VanNoy's Sayings...

Exercise is spinach for the heart!

If you ever had the pleasure of watching "Popeye the Sailor Man", you may recall that before he fought Bruno, his big, muscular adversary, Olive Oil, his girlfriend, always would give him a can of spinach to build up his muscles. Well your heart is also a muscle, and just as spinach strengthened Popeye's muscles, exercise can strengthen your heart muscle so that you may defeat your Bruno. Your Bruno may be high blood pressure, arthritis or diabetes. Regardless, the stronger your heart is, the more likely you are to win YOUR battle with Bruno. Remember, exercise is spinach for the heart!

Don't be fooled by the "feel good" feeling!

Many people justify not going to the doctor because they say "I feel good, I don't need to go to the doctor. I promise, the minute I feel bad, I'm going to go to the doctor". Keep in mind, many people felt GREAT the day before they died! Have a complete physical examination if you have not had one in awhile, even if you feel great. It is better to identify diseases or risk factors before you have symptoms. Unfortunately, the first time you find out that you have high blood pressure could be at the time of a stroke. Please, don't be fooled by the "feel good" feeling.

Treat your body pipes as well as you treat your kitchen pipes!

My first lecture on the affect fatty foods and grease had on arteries was not given to me in medical school but was given to me much earlier in life by my grandmother. Growing up, we often had bacon for breakfast and fried chicken for dinner. My grandmother always told me when I cleaned, "don't you pour that grease down my kitchen sink, you will clog up my pipes!" In medical school I heard the same lesson although phrased differently; 'Foods high in fat will clog our arteries (pipes), and increase the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)'. Isn't it interesting how easily we will consume fatty foods such as fried chicken, and bacon which clog our arteries (pipes), but yet we won't pour grease down our kitchen sinks for fear of clogging the pipes?
